Translating Law into Dictionaries, Or Why One Dictionary Is Not Enough

Szemińska, Weronika. 2014. „Translating Law into Dictionaries, Or Why One Dictionary Is Not Enough”, w: Gerhard Budin — Vesna Lušicky (red.), Languages for Special Purposes in a Multilingual, Transcultural World. Proceedings of the 19th European Symposium on Languages for Special Purposes, 8–10 July 2013, Vienna, Austria. Vienna: University of Vienna, Centre for Translation Studies, 118–125

The paper proposes an answer to two faults in the concept of a terminological translation dictionary, designed as a tool for professional translators of legal texts. Such a dictionary should include various categories of information deemed most useful for translators: definitions, references to legal sources, synonyms, hypo- and hypernyms, equivalents of
various types, collocations etc. Its first fault lies in the fact that the data in each category is not sufficiently extensive. Secondly, the translator does not always require all categories of information presented in the dictionary: frequently the search is restricted to e.g. definition or collocations, in which case wading through the entire massive entry is a waste of time.
The solution could be a terminographic system: a set of dictionaries of various types, including an explanatory dictionary, a frequency dictionary, a semantic dictionary and a dictionary of collocations, with a translation dictionary including all categories of information in a concise form in the centre of the set. All dictionaries are interconnected by a system of cross-references, common macrostructure and mediostructure. The concept is described on the example of a set of dictionaries for translators of legal texts.

Język ohydy. O polskim przekładzie Filth Irvine’a Welsha

Szemińska, Weronika. 2014. „Język ohydy. O polskim przekładzie Filth Irvine’a Welsha”, Language and Literary Studies of WarsawRocznik Naukowy Lingwistycznej Szkoły Wyższej w Warszawie Nr 4: 99–111.

The language in Irvine Welsh’s novel Filth, which tells the story of an Edinburgh policeman Bruce Robertson, has a particular role in the development of the plot and in revealing the subsequent layers of the main character’s mental and physical filth, as well as the filth of the surrounding world. Juggling with elements such as Scots, police slang, brutalisation and vulgarisation as well as diversity of the narrators’ idiolects, together with more or less subtle devices such as repetitions of certain phrases or changes from singular to plural and vice versa, reflect Robertson’s character and emotions and indicate the changes in his state – the deepening mental disorder and the gradual loss of contact with reality. It is not difficult to foresee that not all of the above mentioned elements can be transferred into the Polish translation of the text, made by Jacek Spólny, without troubles.

The aim of the article is to ascertain the translator’s techniques in rendering those elements into Polish and to assess their effectiveness and consistency in their use, and consequently – the accuracy of the entire translation.

Translating Law into a Dictionary: A Terminographic Model

Szemińska, Weronika. 2011. „Translating Law into a Dictionary: A Terminographic Model”, Research in Language Vol. 9 No. 1, 177–186

The purpose of the paper is to present a model dictionary which could serve as a tool for professional translators of legal texts.

Firstly, the methodological approach which was adopted in order to create the model is delineated. It is based on the combined specialist knowledge of three disciplines, namely terminography, translation studies and law. Subsequently, the notion of the translation dictionary as a separate type of terminological dictionary is presented, with particular emphasis on the unit of translation and translation equivalence. The following part of the paper characterises translation of legal texts and its implications concerning the needs of the translator as well as the role of the dictionary in the translation process. Finally, the paper proposes a model dictionary, constructed according to the methodological rules determined at the beginning and in the light of the conclusions drawn from the following analysis.

Tekst w układzie translacyjnym. Projekt typologii metafrastycznej

Szemińska, Weronika. 2011. „Tekst w układzie translacyjnym. Projekt typologii metafrastycznej”, w: Marek Łukasik (red.)
